I agree with Whitney, where on eart did you get this list. This list is stupid not the dogs. Theres more to a dogs intelect than it's breed.
Chow Chows are very intelligent dogs, I've had two.
Obviously someone doesn't know the difference between mindless trainability and intelligence. I have owned Borzoi for over 30 years and have put obedience titles on several. They are independent thinkers.
This is ridiculous. My Pekingese trained easier than any other breed I've owned including German Shepherd, Chihuahuas, Pugs, Rottweilers, Huskys, Spaniels, and Shih tzus. Chow Chows are very smart also. Whoever made this list has obviously never owned a dog. Idiots.

This list is a load of dog poop. Basenjis are a very old and intelligent breed. Some mistake their stubbornness and cat like temperament for idiocy.

Its not that they are "dumb" its just that they are not as smart as others .... I have had many border collies amongst beagles and other hounds ... border collies are just plain smarter..

I disagree with this list. I am a hound person, and I can tell you that hounds are not dumb. They are often times much too smart, and capable of outwitting their handler. The majority of hound breeds have their own personality, and can be extremely stubborn, but certainly not dumb. They tend to do what they want, when they want. Some people mistake this for stupidity. I am not saying every hound is highly intelligent, nor am I saying they are the smartest group of dogs, but most of them do not deserve to be in the top 10 dumbest breeds.

First off breed is a general outline, there are always those specail dogs. Second all those people saying the dog was so easy to train, usually they the dumber the dog the easier it is to train just like humans because the smarter dogs think about it to much so you have to always use the same gestures and what not for the command...
just becuase dogs are easy to train doesnt mean they are smart. My beagle is not the smartest dog but I love her.

Instead of being "dumb", I think this is more of the top ten breeds that are most difficult to train. However, this is not 100% true because there are many of these breeds that are intelligent with good handlers.
Also, a side note - I own a Pekingese and before she turned one (a month ago), she knew how to do tricks (lie down, give paw, wait, play dead, spin, and get leash). So being bias because I actually have a fairly intelligent breed of Pekingese, I find myself disagreeing that they are "dumb".
This is based on Stanley Coren's cohesive Rank of Dog intelligence. In fact these are the dogs that have ranked lowest on the scale. Personally I have a chow and he is smart as a whip, but statistically dog trainers and people have put these dog in the lowest category because of their stubborn behavior and their general difficulty to to train. Border Collies, the whizkids of the canine world on average only have to be taught something 5 times before it puts it to memory. Chows on the other hand have to be asked 80 out of 100 in order to commit it to memory. I see a lot of defensive dog owners here who obviously feel the need to stick up for their breed, but face the facts . . . if you have any of these dogs you've either been blessed with really cooperative canines or you're fooling yourself. It's not a big deal people, whoever posted this got their facts from a PHD in psychology, so instead of bashing them contact the good doctor Coren and try and debunk all of the testing and time he put into his classifications of intelligence.

Where the red fern grows is a book about Coonhounds a different breed than Bloodhounds. But I've never owned any of these breeds so I would not know if they are intelligent or not.

None of you people should be commenting unless you own one of these dogs! Not every single dog in these breeds are dumb! I'm sure many bloodhounds are smart, and I'm sure many afghans and bassets and beagles are smart, too. This list is correct, and it could be proven, I am sure. I once saw a beagle that was incredibly smart, and one that was dumb! I do, however, believe Borzois are smart. just sometimes a little bit stubborn. This list is correct.

Mutts are smart
Chow-Chows are smart! I suppose this list is correct, but I did not know that, because m friend once had a chow chow, and she was very smart. Afghan hounds are in a lot of movies, so they seem not to far gone.

Garbage in...Garbage out....a dog is as smart as his owner. You can train any dog to do special things if you spend that time with them. Every dog is smart, they know how to work their owner if they have to, they are like kids, they know what they can and cannot get away with. If you want any dog to be "smart" whatever that means to you, you need to take the time to train them, obedience can be taught to any dog, some breeds are more stubborn but I have seen all of these breeds listed working well in the ring. The fact is that all these breeds make good pets and that is what it's all about. Even the top ten smartest list comes from people taking the time to train them and work with them. I've had a lot of dogs,I loved them all the same and each one was "smart" in their own way. It's just a matter of knowing the breed, and what their purpose/design was breed for.

I must agree. Border collie mixes are pretty smart... I bet border collie/poodle mixes are very smart... and I Afghan hound/ Basenji mixes are pretty dumb. But Basenjis seem pretty smart to me. They are easy 2 train, and pretty reliable. A basenji may not B the smartest, but they are a lot smarter than borzois! (Sorry, borzoi genius)

I have always wanted to see a Great dane/chiwawa mix. I am not even sure if this is possible, but if it is, please tell me all about it! Also, comment if you know any Afghan hound/Border Collie mixes... I bet they would be average.
PLEASE stop talking about these dog mixes and start talking about this list, which is correct. Just to get it over with, A great Dane can have babies with a chiwawa, but it can only happen if the female is the Dane, and it is pretty rare. And it is impossible for them to breed without help from a ladder or stool. I think this mix should NEVER be tried, unless you are a professional dog breeder, but I think it is cruel. If you must try this, which I would never, if the Dane is the male, the female will surely die.

This list is INTELLIGENCE.Not trainability. Mindless trainability is way different then intelligence. An intelligent dog is able to figure out puzzles that you give them, and know how to figure out how to do things extremely quickly, not mindless trainability. I could train a Beagle and a German Shepherd, and the beagle would do it mindlessly and the German Shepherd would do it, but they would think while doing it. They would both obey, but the German Shepherd would be smarter.

Calm down, beagle lover! It is just a fact. They were not trying to be mean. Just because beagles are not the smartest does not mean they are not cute or sweet. Not every breed can be smartest, beagle lover. I happen to love afghan hounds. They are much sweeter than Border Collies. ( But I like Border collies, too.) This list could be proved. Beagles may not like it, but it is true. And please, no rude comments on this. I said nothing wrong. Many of these comments are not nice at all. If you truly like mutts, you should call them mixed breeds. Also, may words were not nice at all. I like beagles, too, so you are not alone!

Just so you know, Dalmatians (arguably) are the least intelligent dog breed, and they're not even on the list?
Also, beagles are actually highly intelligent dogs, they're just a very indepedent breed, so they do not respond well to obediance training, just like most hounds.

I love all dogs however, and individual dogs of ''dumb'' breeds CAN be very smart.I own a bordercollie, and even though they are considered to be the smartest dogs in the world, there are some very dumb bordercollies out there.mine is not dumb

I think that Bull Mastiff's are very intelligent dogs. At school we had a How-To-Speech. My friend Ryan brung his Bull Mastiff to school. There are very smart dogs. I like them and they are pretty huge. He did more than I'd say 23 tricks and when he said "STOP" it was like saying a magic word and he was like perfect I disagree on this list completley.

No dog is 'DUMB". I have a Border Collie. Yes, I think that she is smart, well trained, and intelligent. SOME of these dogs may be called "Dumb" because they aren't very trainable. But,some, like the basset hound, are really dumb. This list is accurate.
Generally speaking ... I am amazed the Chihuahua didn't make this list, I found the breed to be one of the most difficult in not only training to do a wide range of things but most importantly simple critical thinking from the dog's behalf. I had an aunt that bred them for 20 yrs and an uncle that bred English Bulldogs (which were also easy to train but no superior intelligence from his batches of pups). I love seeing how so many people protect the breed they own (of course this is the same as parents when they speak about how special their child is and someone comes along and says "I don't think so"). I don't think anyone can deny that each animal has it's own personality not just based on breed but the animal itself, as well as intelligence lvls. I had a Rottweiler Labrador that would commit things to memory just ONCE, also had a pure bred Lab Retriever that was as "dumb" as they come, a seemingly un-trainable German Shephard, a Chow with almost independent wolf-like critical thinking. So really, you can find some dogs out there that don't quite live up to their labels and others that over-exceed them. This list is based on a generalization and should be viewed as such and not a direct attack nor "EVERY dog from this breed should be considered dumb".

I'd like to know how you got this list? Bulldogs are actually quite intelligent, just stubborn. Beagles, Basset Hounds, and Bloodhounds are easy to train, but their noses and hunt drive can hinder training.
